“Started with two cows in 2019. Six now, and a waiting list for calves.”

Kavita bought her first two Gir cows with a self-help group loan in 2019, after a decade of working other people’s fields. She paid the loan back in three years.

Six cows now, milked by hand at 4:30 and walked to our Saoner centre by 6, where every can is tested before it is chilled. Neighbours ask to book her calves before they are born.
She grows berseem on all three acres and keeps the shed open on two sides for air. “A cow that sleeps well gives sweet milk,” she says. “That is all the science I know.”
“Gauri was the first. She still walks in front.”
